serve forward

If you had the time and energy, would you put in a little more effort today to save future you from doing it later?

One principle that I started with earlier in life was that – if I were in a good flow state while working on an assignment or project, I would continue past the intended break for timeframe or milestones. Perhaps this has earned me the name of a workaholic in the past. But it was always a good feeling when I picked back up to see that I was closer to the finish line; finishing earlier than scheduled provided that I didn’t spend too much time finessing the finer details at the end of the project.

Of course, with less work to do in the next sitting, it results in less time or effort to hit the next target. Creating space for you to continue “serving forward”; It’s a compounding effect. Team this up with a good set of notes on the thought process and intentions helps you step back into that frame of mind quicker.

It could be walking a fine line between doing yourself a favour and overworking. So you will have to find your balance making sure that you have the capacity to be proactive and not at the detriment of daily tasks and well-needed downtime. Be mindful of where your draw that line.

the take away

Next time you have a spare minute consider what you can do today to support future you.
